new-plow-3.jpgWhen it snows, it’s the Town of Golden’s job to clear more than 55km of roadways, and over 20km of trails and sidewalks. Residents and businesses are encouraged to do their part to help Golden’s snow removal crew clear snow as safely and effectively as possible!

Winter Road Maintenance Priorities
The purpose of the Town’s Snow Clearing and Sanding Policy is to provide safe municipal roads, sidewalks and parking lots during winter conditions through effective, efficient and affordable snow removal and ice control operations. The policy provides staff with an established priority-based system for winter maintenance:
  • The Town uses two plow and sand trucks, one snow hauler, one sidewalk machine, two front-end loaders, one grader and one backhoe for snow clearing. To run all this equipment, we have four equipment operators, a crew foreman and one person on the ground taking care of icy sidewalks, stairways and municipal buildings.
  • Streets are maintained on a priority basis, established by making sure hills, major streets and emergency routes are cleared first to ensure public safety. After a large snow event, snow removal along roads and sidewalks begins with:
    • 9th Street South and 10th Avenue North (within the confines of the Town’s jurisdiction);
    • significant hills including Selkirk, Lafontaine and Gareb Road;
    • the area around the Fire Hall;
    • school routes; and
    • some public parking lots.
  • Once the main routes are taken care of, snow removal continues with remaining Town owned parking areas; remaining residential streets; the Airport; and remaining sidewalks and trails.
  • Driveways of senior citizens or persons with disabilities are plowed as soon as possible after an initial clean-up has been completed.
  • It can take two to three days for an initial clean-up after a large snow event. Once the first-round plowing and sanding has occurred, the crews then start on ice cutting and snow hauling processes, if required.  Intersections, pedestrian crossings, hills and sidewalks get sanded first to ensure public safety.

How residents can help:
Keeping our roads and alleyways clear is an important part of helping make winter operations services more efficient and to ensure public safety:
  • Please keep vehicles off roadways and out of alleyways leading up to and after a storm event.
  • Alleyways should be clear of woodpiles, boats and cars and travel trailers, as outlined in the Traffic, Parking and Streets Regulation Bylaw #966.
  • Watch for snow removal and parking restriction signs and please adhere to all posted signage.  

Clearing snow around your home:
  • When clearing driveways clear to the right and try to wait until the equipment has gone through at least once. Crews often return to widen roads which results in additional sidecasting and windrowing across driveways. Widening is done to make sure adequate emergency vehicle access is maintained.
  • Shovelling out on to the roadways is a bylaw infraction.

Be safe:
  • Watch for equipment and ice on sidewalks and plan ahead. If there has been a storm or if you know one is coming, assume that it will be two or three days before crews catch up. 
  • Drive according to the conditions and if walking wear appropriate footwear to prevent accidental slips/falls.

How businesses can help:
  • Businesses and commercial property owners are required to remove snow and ice from the sidewalk in front of their building by noon every day excluding Sundays and statutory holidays, as outlined in the Traffic, Parking and Streets Regulation Bylaw #966.

Town staff actively patrols throughout the winter for violations that could be hampering the snow removal process. Town staff thanks all residents and business for their cooperation and patience throughout the season.
