Council ensures penalty date for unpaid property taxes extended to October 1 Print Article Font Size
Town of Golden residents and businesses will now have until September 30 to pay their property taxes without penalty, providing more time for property owners facing challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Province recently announced that the 10 per cent penalty on unpaid business property taxes for 2020 will not apply until October 1. Last Tuesday, Golden’s Town Council took this a step further locally to include all residential property taxes in this as well.

“We continue to monitor and analyze the changing situation surrounding COVID-19 and the actions of other levels of government to determine how we can support our community,” said Mayor Ron Oszust. “Council is committed to supporting residents and businesses in Golden during these unprecedented times, while also making sure we are being financially responsible as local government.”

The due date for property taxes will remain July 2, but no one will be penalized for non-payment until October 1. The Town still encourages residents and businesses to pay their property taxes by July 2 if possible.

“This helps us to ensure we can deliver our core services to the community as well as meet our own requirements to pay other taxing authorities on behalf of residents, including the Columbia Shuswap Regional District, the hospital district, police, Municipal Finance Authority and BC Assessment by August 1,” said Chief Administrative Officer, Jon Wilsgard.

The ability to pay until the end of September without penalty is meant to provide relief to everyone struggling financially due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Other relief measures announced earlier this month in response to the COVID-19 pandemic include:
  • A zero per cent tax revenue increase for 2020 instead of the planned 3.28 per cent increase;
  • Adoption of a Revenue Anticipation Bylaw, allowing the Town to borrow against its anticipated revenue for the year to ensure adequate cash flow for operations until property taxes have been paid;
  • A reduction in business license fees by approximately 50 percent and fees will be deferred until November 30; and
  • A deadline extension for residential utility bill payments until April 30, 2020.

Property tax bills will be mailed by the end of May and be due on July 2, but no one will be penalized for non-payment until October 1. For more information on property taxes, including payment options, visit golden.ca/propertytaxes.
